Just east of Ventura you will find the quaint town of Ojai, and just on the outskirts you will find Wheeler Gorge Campground. The campground is set along a creek that, during summer, dries up. This National Forest campground is littered with oaks and most spots are shady and spacious. You really can't go wrong selecting a spot here, as the creek meanders through camp and most spots are scenic. Just across the street from the campground you will find a small visitor's center where a few supplies, books, maps and information about ranger talks are available. Nearby Ojai is a fun place to spend an afternoon perusing shops and checking out the local artistry.
