Raccoon Creek State Park, Hookstown, Pennsylvania
again, how dilapidated our home state of California parks can be. Within camp you will find showers, an amphitheater and chapel, a playground, and hiking trails. Some hiking trails lead you to beautiful falls. Others lead you to Raccoon Lake, a beautiful man made lake that is surrounded by trees. We hiked to this lake, however if you would rather drive, large parking lots are available for campers and day use visitors. We were stunned by the lake, its beauty, and the fun activities to enjoy! We felt almost like we had stumbled upon the resort Baby and her family stay at in Dirty Dancing; a treat for us Californians. At the lake you can enjoy the beach, get lunch or hand-dipped ice cream at the burger shack, or enjoy the lake itself via swimming, fishing, or watercraft rentals. A privatized kiosk offers reasonable rentals of paddle boat style bikes, motorized boats, canoes, and kayaks. We enjoyed pedaling our way around the lake on the water bikes. Also at the lake's edge you will find many picnic areas, a playground, and a large, grassy playfield. Hunting during season in permitted areas is also allowed. This was a pleasant and fun stop along our way, just an hour or so out of Pittsburgh.
